MERDA D'ARTISTA
Nel maggio 1961 Piero Manzoni realizza la Merda d’artista, in 90 esemplari, scatoletta per conserve del diametro di sei centimetri, sigillata, sui cui è apposta un’etichetta a stampa in cui si legge in italiano, inglese, francese e tedesco, la scritta “Merda d’artista. Contenuto netto gr 30. Conservata al naturale. Prodotta ed inscatolata nel maggio 1961”, il cui prezzo corrisponde a 30 grammi d’oro. L’opera viene presentata al pubblico solo dopo alcune mostre fondamentali di Manzoni: “Zero Edition Exposition Demonstration” alla Galerie Schmela di Düsseldorf, con Arman, Aubertin, Pol Bury, Castellani, Fontana, Klein, Lo Savio, Mack, Manzoni, Peeters, Piene, Schoonhoven, Soto, Spoerri, Tinguely, Uecker, “Internationale Malerei 1960-61” al Deutsch-Ordens-Schloss, Wolframs-Eschenbach, e “Nove tendencije” alla Galerija Suvremene Umjetnosti di Zagabria.

On May 1961 Piero Manzoni created 90 examples of Merda d’artista (Artist’s Shit), sealed cans with a diameter of six centimetres carrying a label reading in Italian, English, French and German, the title Merda d’artista. Contenuto netto gr. 30. Conservata al naturale. Prodotta ed inscatolata nel maggio 1961 (Artist’s Shit. Contents Net Gr 30. Freshly preserved, produced and tinned in May 1961) the price of which was fixed at that of 30 grams of gold. The work was presented to the public only after a number of Manzoni’s fundamental exhibitions: Zero Edition Exposition Demonstration at the Galerie Schmela in Düsseldorf, with Arman, Aubertin, Pol Bury, Castellani, Fontana, Klein, Lo Slavio, Mack, Manzoni, Peeters, Piene, Schoonhoven, Soto, Spoerri, Tinguely and Uecker, Internationale Malerei 1960-61 at the Deutsch-Ordens-Schloss, Wolframs-Eschenbach, and Nove tendencije at the Galerija Suvremene Umjetnosti in Zagreb.

In piena stagione estiva ligure, alla galleria del Pescetto di Albisola, il 12 agosto 1961 inaugura la mostra collettiva “in villeggiatura da Pescetto” dove Piero Manzoni presenta per la prima volta in pubblico le scatolette di Merda d’artista. Nel mese di settembre Piero presenta diverse scatolette di Merda d’artista nella galleria milanese di Luca Scacchi Gracco in una mostra personale. Nel 1962 allo Stedelijk Museum di Amsterdam Manzoni partecipa alla collettiva “Nul” dove tra le altre opere espone anche 3 scatolette di Merda d’Artista.
First exhibitions of the Artist’s Shit
In the middle of the Ligurian summer season, on August 12th, 1961, the group exhibition in villeggiatura da Pescetto (on vacation at Pescetto) opened at the Pescetto gallery in Albisola. Piero Manzoni presented some cans of Merda d’artista (Artist’s Shit) for the first time in public. In September he presented several cans of Artist’s Shit in a solo exhibition at the Milanese gallery of Luca Scacchi Gracco. In 1962 Manzoni took part to the group exhibition “Nul” at the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam where, among other works, he also exhibited 3 cans of Artist’s Shit.
